Clay Gang Episode 1

Cutters Bend Gazette
BLOODBATH!

Yesterday was the most horrific day in the history of Cutter’s Bend. A group of strangers who we had welcomed into our peaceful town became foul murderous black-hearted killers and left the town devastated in making their getaway.

Witnesses say that the events began when the strangers (“Clay” White, Ron Fargo, Bull Baxter and Jack White) were playing cards in the town saloon. Apparently a group of local farmer’s sons (Frank Coteridge, William Coteridge and Jesper Daniels) came into the saloon and called out Clay White for the killing of Samuel Coteridge (the brother of Frank and William and Jesper’s brother-in-law). The farm-boys were armed and demanded the strangers come out into the street to face them.

Clay, Jack and Bull walked out into the street. It was only later that witnesses realised that Ron had taken a position on the upstairs balcony of the saloon.
At this point no guns were drawn and the events of the day could have ended so differently. Clay apparently demanded that the brothers identify who they were and who he had killed. Frank did so and the evil Clay chilled the spines of witnesses when he said “He can’t have been that important, I don’t remember killing him.” At this point in a blur of movement, Clay pulled out his gun and began shooting, closely followed by Bull and then Jack. Witnesses said that Frank and William were hit but still pulled out their guns, while Jesper lifted his rifle. Bushwacking Ron joined in the shooting from the balcony. 20 seconds later it was all over. Jesper lay dead from a bullet wound in the middle of his forehead. Frank and William lay unconscious. The strangers are understood to have taken a couple of flesh wounds.

At this point the most despicable acts ever observed in Cutter’s Bend took place. Clay and Bull approached the bodies of Frank and William. Clay lifted his revolver and shot the helpless Frank in the head, murdering him in cold blood. Baxter approached William and committed the same evil deed. The vile Bull Baxtor then reportedly looted the boys of their purses, before striping them of their boots and guns. He took these to the undertakers and dumped them on the porch, shouting for all to hear “These are to pay for their burials!”

Unbelievably the villains then retired to the (now-deserted) saloon and raided the bar. George the barman reports that they emptied his till and began drinking the finest whisky he had.

Sheriff Stuart Dibble was fetched by a boy from the store. Our heroic lawman then called in deputies Bobby Giles and Martin Roberts. All three of them set about rousing the town’s men to tackle the murderous scum holed up in the saloon. The Sheriff tried to talk the evil killers into surrendering, guaranteeing them a fair trial, but the foul bastards were not to be lured out, surely they knew that the only justice due to them was a long drop and a short rope.

It is understood that one of the men tried to escape from a side window, but the sheriff had posted riflemen in alleyways to prevent them getting away scot-free. Then loud noises of chopping wood were heard, before insanity descended once again. It seems that the monsters attempted to blow up the saloon from the inside. Their own horses were caught in the blast which destroyed most of the front of the saloon. The beasts had to be put out of their misery later. The explosion threw up a lot of dust and the fugitives took their chance to flee. In the chaos it seems that several of them were shot by our heroic townsfolk and lawmen as bloodstains were found later leading to the stables. The crazed Baxton is understood to have detonated another stick of dynamite between the saloon and Cutter General Stores. The Saloon then collapsed and the Stores are in urgent need of repair. The evil killers seem to have stolen four horses and headed South away from the town. Sheriff Dibble and John Gorman later set off to track the killers, whilst the two deputies organised a posse and supplies to purse the wicked foursome.

The County has already posted rewards for the capture of these men for assault, murder, criminal damage, horse theft, looting, robbery and damaging public property. Rewards have been posted at $100 each for Ron Fargo and Jack White, $200 for Bull Baxter and $250 for the ringleader, Clay White. These rewards are expected to be paid by the State and Cutter’s Bend welcomes all who would do the good deed of bringing in these criminals alive, or if necessary, dead.
